The Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Original Cave Drawing:

My Cave Drawing:

I chose this particular cave drawing to recreate because of the story that comes along with it. The drawing shows two extinct cave lions (one male, one female), which practically come to life with its size of about six feet in length. Scientists have wondered for years whether ancient cave lions exhibited a mane, like the lions in Africa, but thanks to the founding of this drawing, they now have been able to solve the mystery that, in fact, the cave lions did not have manes.

Concepts and Quotes:

1) Werner Herzog mentioned in his narration that the people from 35,000+ years ago did not actually inhabit the cave, but used it only as a religious and creative outlet. This suggests that stereotypical perceptions of ancient peoples as only focusing on hunting, gathering, habitat building, etc. to be completely false and a poor representation of their lives because they gave themselves time to harness their creative energies towards the arts as well.

2) Because the ancient peoples of the area of The Cave of Forgotten Dreams left their mark in all types of media (drawings, figurines, design), scientists and theologists can connect the real and spirit world, and get a much better understanding of what the everyday life with art and religion meant to these people compared to what it means today.

3) "What exactly took place here, only the paintings could tell us." - Werner Herzog on the Cave of Forgotten dreams
Herzog brings up a great point, in that scientists could spend years upon years researching the cave, but they will never get the whole or any of the story right because there is no way to know for sure what happened there. The paintings on the cave walls are the only things that have been through and seen what scientists want to know, but they cannot talk about what they've seen, only what they depict.
